The Shadow

A high-performance shortboard with a little more flow built in.

Pyzel started the Shadow from the Phantom, then redesigned it as a more refined high-performance board while keeping the added flow and glide that define the Phantom. The Shadow uses a wider, forward outline to add stability, paddle power and easy speed without moving away from a proper high-performance package.

The Shadow is designed for beach breaks, points, reefs and even slabs. Its medium-high rocker and single-with-double-to-Vee bottom contour are designed to generate speed while still allowing tight, powerful turns.

The result is a high-performance board with enough stability and flow to work across a broad range of conditions, while retaining the response needed for tighter and more vertical surfing.

Wave Range 3–8ft

Designed to cover a broad range of everyday surf from points to reefs and beach breaks.

Rocker Medium High

Medium-high rocker combines speed generation with the curve needed for powerful turns.

Bottom Single → Double → Vee

Single concave blends through double to Vee, combining speed, drive and rail response.

Fin Setup Thruster · Quad · 5-Fin

Pyzel lists thruster, quad and five-fin options for the Shadow.

What makes it work

Flow and stability first. High performance still very much included.

Pyzel's current description centres the Shadow around a wider forward outline, medium-high rocker and a proven single-with-double-to-Vee bottom. The aim is easy speed and flow without giving away the response needed for powerful turns.

01 · Speed

Medium-high rocker

Medium-high rocker combines speed generation with enough curve to keep the Shadow responsive through tighter turns.

02 · Drive

Wide point at centre

The wide point sits at centre rather than behind it, giving the board a stable, forward-feeling platform while the nose is pulled in for freedom through critical turns.

03 · Release

Single → Double → Vee

The single-with-double-to-Vee bottom contour is carried over from the Phantom family, combining speed, drive and release.

The shape

Phantom DNA, refined into a sharper high-performance package.

The Shadow's wide point sits at centre rather than behind it, which is unusual for a high-performance shortboard. Pyzel pulls the nose in by almost half an inch and adds rocker through the final 12 inches of the nose to keep it free through critical turns.

A gentle hip adds sensitivity and looseness, while the slightly pulled-in squash tail tightens the turning radius and helps the board surf more vertically. Volume is kept forward of centre, with added foam under the chest for paddle power and float through slower sections.

Outline Wide point at centre with a pulled-in nose
Rocker Medium-high nose and tail rocker
Bottom Single with Double to Vee
Deck & rails Medium/Standard rails with volume carried slightly forward
Tail Squash tail with a gentle hip for sensitivity and looseness

Why the Shadow?

High-performance response with a little more help built in.

The Shadow is not simply a wider high-performance shortboard. The forward-centred wide point adds stability and paddle power, while the rocker, bottom contour and refined tail keep the board responsive when you push it.

That is why Pyzel positions it across beach breaks, points, reefs and even slabs. The board is designed to keep its flow in weaker sections while still allowing tight, powerful turns when the wave offers more.

Who is the Shadow for?

A high-performance shape with a broader sweet spot.

01 · Daily driver

One board for a lot of conditions

The 3–8ft range and high-performance rocker make the Shadow a versatile shortboard across beach breaks, points, reefs and more powerful surf.

02 · Performance surfer

Performance without the usual narrow platform

Pyzel recommends riding the Shadow around your own height to an inch over, in your preferred high-performance dimensions.

03 · Versatility

Intermediate through advanced

Pyzel positions the Shadow for intermediate, advanced and competition surfers looking for a high-performance board with extra flow and stability.

Bob's Take

A high-performance Pyzel with a little more help built in.

The Shadow is the kind of board that makes sense when you want one shortboard to cover a lot of the conditions you're likely to encounter.

The appeal isn't simply the wider outline. It is the balance between a more stable, forward-centred platform and the performance details that keep the board responsive: medium-high rocker, a pulled-in nose, gentle hip, squash tail and single-with-double-to-Vee bottom.

For UK surfers, the 3–8ft range and ability to work across beach breaks, points and reefs make the Shadow an interesting high-performance option when conditions aren't perfectly lined up.

We'd start with your guide volume, then use Pyzel's advice to ride the Shadow around your height to an inch over and choose the dimensions that suit your surfing.
