Understanding Surfboard Volume
What does surfboard volume actually mean?
Surfboard volume is simply the amount of space a board takes up (or displaces in water), measured in litres. In general, more volume means more flotation, stability and easier paddling, while less volume can make a board feel more responsive and sensitive under your feet.
That makes volume a really useful starting point when choosing a surfboard — particularly when you're buying your first board or moving into something new.
But volume isn't the be-all and end-all. Two boards with exactly the same volume can feel completely different in the water. Length, width, thickness, outline, rocker, rails, construction, your ability and the waves you surf all play a part.
That's why our calculator uses volume as a starting point, rather than treating it as the whole answer.
