🎯 Today's Mission

Learn how positioning and paddling work together to help you catch a wave rather than watch it pass underneath you.

✅ This Lesson Is For You If...

You're catching whitewater but struggling to generate enough speed for a wave.

You want to understand why positioning matters as much as paddle power.

📚 In This Lesson You'll Learn

  • How your position on the board affects wave catching.
  • How to build paddle speed.
  • Why starting earlier improves your chances.
  • Three simple rules for catching waves.

🏄 Where You Sit Matters

Your position on the board and your position in the water both affect your ability to catch a wave. Too far forward and the nose may pearl. Too far back and the board becomes harder to accelerate.

🌊 Build Your Paddle Speed

Lie centrally on the board, stay relaxed and use long, purposeful strokes. As the wave approaches, increase your effort rather than waiting until the last second.

💡 Bob Gnarly Tip

Start paddling earlier than you think. Beginners often wait until the wave is already lifting the tail of the board.

🇬🇧 UK Surf Tip

On a UK beach, current and wind can move you away from the peak quickly. Keep checking your position rather than paddling blindly.

⚠️ Common Beginner Mistake

Waiting until the final moment before paddling hard. Earlier, purposeful paddling gives the board time to accelerate.

🌊 One Final Wave...

Look back, commit early and let the wave help you. Paddle power matters, but timing matters just as much.

📚 Lesson Summary

  • ✅ Find the board's sweet spot.
  • ✅ Paddle early and with purpose.
  • ✅ Keep the board pointing towards the beach.
  • ✅ Look back and check the wave before committing.
