Turn your pop-up into a smooth, repeatable movement and take it into real waves.
🎓 Learn To Surf UK Academy
🎯 Today's Mission
Turn your beach pop-up into a smooth, repeatable movement while riding small waves.
✅ This Lesson Is For You If...
Your pop-up works on the beach but becomes difficult when the board is moving.
You're ready to improve timing, balance and consistency.
📚 In This Lesson You'll Learn
- Why timing beats rushing.
- The most common pop-up mistakes.
- How to practise the movement.
- Why keeping your eyes up improves balance.
🏄 Timing Beats Speed
A good pop-up starts when the board has enough forward momentum. Don't rush to your feet before the board is gliding. Keep your hands under your chest, bring your feet underneath you and land in a balanced surfing stance.
⚠️ Common Beginner Mistakes
- Pushing up too early.
- Standing before the board has speed.
- Landing with both feet pointing forwards.
- Looking down instead of where the wave is going.
💡 Bob Gnarly Tip
Keep your head up. Your body tends to follow your eyes, so looking down makes balance much harder.
🧘 Practise the Movement
On the beach, rehearse the same sequence slowly: paddle position, hands down, feet underneath, low stance, eyes up. Smooth and repeatable beats explosive.
🇬🇧 UK Surf Tip
Cold-water surfing often means more layers and slightly less mobility. A good warm-up and repeated dry-land practice can make your first attempts feel much more natural.
🌊 One Final Wave...
Your pop-up doesn't need to be perfect — it needs to be repeatable. Build the movement slowly and let speed develop naturally.
📚 Lesson Summary
- ✅ Wait for board speed.
- ✅ Use a smooth, controlled movement.
- ✅ Land with your feet in a stable stance.
- ✅ Keep your head and eyes up.
