LESSON 008
What Should I Wear for My First Surf Lesson?
Know exactly what to wear, what your surf school normally provides and how to stay comfortable in UK waters.
🎯 Today's Mission
Arrive at your first surf lesson knowing exactly what to wear and what to bring, without spending money on equipment you don't need yet.
📚 In This Lesson You'll Learn
- What you'll normally wear during a beginner surf lesson.
- Whether you need to buy your own wetsuit.
- What to wear underneath it.
- What to bring to the beach.
- How to stay warm before and after surfing.
What Should I Wear?
The good news is that your first surf lesson doesn't require a specialist wardrobe. Most UK surf schools expect complete beginners to arrive without their own surfing equipment.
Usually, you simply need swimwear, a towel, comfortable footwear and warm clothes for afterwards. The surf school will normally provide the wetsuit and surfboard.
You don't need to look like a surfer before your first lesson. You just need to arrive ready to learn.
🏄 Bob Gnarly Tip
Don't buy everything before you've tried surfing. Take the lesson first. You'll learn what equipment suits you and whether surfing is something you want to pursue regularly.
🩱 Your Wetsuit
A full-length wetsuit is normally supplied by the surf school and will be chosen for the local water temperature and season. It should feel snug but shouldn't restrict your breathing or movement.
A close fit is important because the suit works by trapping a thin layer of water next to your skin, which your body warms. Don't be alarmed if it feels tighter than ordinary clothing when you first put it on.
⚠️ Common Beginner Mistake
Wearing a loose T-shirt or bulky clothing under your wetsuit. It can bunch up, become uncomfortable and reduce the effectiveness of the suit. Stick to normal swimwear underneath unless your surf school tells you otherwise.
👙 What Should I Wear Underneath?
A swimsuit, bikini, swim shorts or fitted swimming trunks are all fine. Choose whatever makes you comfortable. Avoid cotton clothing or anything bulky that will become heavy and uncomfortable when wet.
🧤 Will I Need Boots, Gloves or a Hood?
Not necessarily. In warmer months a wetsuit may be all you need. In colder UK conditions, surf schools may recommend or provide boots, gloves or a hood. Your instructor will know what is appropriate for the day.
🇬🇧 UK Surf Tip
British sea temperatures can stay surprisingly cool even when the weather is sunny. Bring a warm hoodie, fleece or jacket for afterwards because you'll cool down quickly once the wetsuit comes off.
🎒 What Should I Bring?
- Swimwear.
- Towel.
- Warm clothes for afterwards.
- Comfortable footwear or flip-flops.
- Drinking water.
- Sunscreen, even on cloudy days.
- A bag for wet clothing.
That's about it. Leave expensive watches and jewellery at home, and don't take valuables onto the beach unless your surf school provides secure storage.
👓 What About Glasses?
If you wear glasses, ask your surf school what they recommend. Unless securely retained for watersports, ordinary glasses are best left somewhere safe. If you wear contact lenses, follow the advice of your optician if you have concerns.
💙 Remember...
Your first surf lesson isn't a fashion show. The most important things are being warm, comfortable, safe and ready to enjoy yourself.

Keep it simple. Bring your swimwear, towel and warm clothes. Your surf school will normally take care of the specialist kit and will tell you if anything extra is needed for the conditions.
🏄 Bob Gnarly Tip
Invest in the experience before the equipment. Your first lesson will teach you far more about what you actually need than any shopping list can.
