The Power Tiger

The in-between board built to handle more power.

The Power Tiger came about when John John Florence wanted a board that could sit between the Red Tiger and his Ghost in terms of wave size and quality. The Red Tiger had become his choice for slower, weaker waves, but he wanted something that could take over as the surf became bigger and more powerful.

The most obvious change is the outline. Pyzel pulled in both the nose and tail, creating more curve through the whole outline and changing the way the board fits into the wave.

The result is a more responsive board with a narrower tail for hold at speed, a pulled-in nose for fitting into hollow curves, and thinner rails that can be buried more easily in powerful surf.

Wave Range 3–8FT

Pyzel lists the Power Tiger for waves from around 3ft through 8ft.

Rails Medium / Standard

The rails are thinned compared with the Red Tiger to help engage the rail in faster, more powerful waves.

Bottom Single → Double → Vee

A single-to-double-to-vee bottom contour gives the board speed while supporting rail-to-rail response.

What makes it work

More curve. More hold. More power.

The Power Tiger's performance comes from a series of relatively subtle changes that all point in the same direction: keeping speed while making the board more controlled and responsive when the waves get faster and more powerful.

01 · Outline

Pulled in at both ends

Pulling in the nose and tail creates more curve throughout the outline, helping the Power Tiger fit tighter into the wave and making it more responsive through turns.

02 · Tail

Narrower for hold

The narrower tail is designed to hold better when the board is being pushed hard through turns, helping prevent the tail from sliding when loaded at speed.

03 · Rails

Thinner for powerful surf

Pyzel thinned the rails so the surfer can sink the rail more easily in faster waves, helping with barrels and bigger carves without excessive pushback.

The Shape

A refined outline built for speed and hold.

The Power Tiger takes the Red Tiger concept into more powerful surf by pulling in the nose and tail. That creates more curve through the outline and gives the board a more responsive feel when pushed hard.

The tail rocker has also been increased slightly, with an additional ⅛ inch of curve through the final 18 inches. This helps the board tip onto the rail at speed, loosens the response and adds holding power through turns.

Why the Power Tiger?

When the Red Tiger starts feeling small, step into more power.

Pyzel developed the Power Tiger specifically to bridge the gap between the Red Tiger and Ghost. It is aimed at the point where the waves have become bigger and more powerful but you still want the speed and responsiveness that made the Red Tiger so effective.

The pulled-in outline lets the board fit into tighter, hollow sections of wave, while the narrower tail gives it more hold when the board is being driven hard through turns.

The thinner rails then allow the surfer to sink the rail more easily, particularly when knifing into barrels or holding through bigger carves.

Who is the Power Tiger for?

A high-performance board for bigger, better and more powerful waves.

01 · Waves

3–8ft

Pyzel lists the Power Tiger for 3–8ft waves, placing it directly between the smaller-wave focus of the Red Tiger and the larger-wave capability of the Ghost.

02 · When to change

When the Red Tiger feels small

Pyzel recommends moving to the Power Tiger when the Red Tiger begins to feel a little small for the waves you want to ride.

03 · Sizing

Same length, less volume

Pyzel suggests riding it at the same length as your Red Tiger with a touch less volume, or going up an inch in length and slightly narrower.

Bob's Take

The board for that awkward gap between small and serious surf.

The Power Tiger makes sense because it isn't trying to replace either the Red Tiger or the Ghost. Pyzel built it specifically for the space between them.

The Red Tiger is the choice for slower, weaker waves around head-high and below. The Ghost comes into its own when the surf becomes properly powerful. The Power Tiger sits between those two points, giving you more hold and control as the waves get bigger without jumping all the way to the Ghost.

The pulled-in nose and tail are the big story. They add curve and responsiveness, while the narrower tail helps maintain hold when you're pushing hard through turns.

The thinner rails are another important detail. They make it easier to sink the rail in faster waves, particularly when you're trying to knife into a barrel or hold a big carve.

Pyzel's sizing advice is refreshingly straightforward: if your Red Tiger is starting to feel too small for the waves, ride the Power Tiger at the same length with a touch less volume, or go an inch longer and a little narrower. Stock Power Tiger dimensions are approximately ¼ inch narrower and 1/16 inch thinner than equivalent Red Tiger sizes.
