The Ghost

A high-performance design built for sensitivity, control and speed.

The Ghost is a high-performance board that Pyzel says works well for all levels of surfer and can be considered a one-board quiver for trips where decent to good waves are on the menu. It has become one of John John Florence's favourites for a wide range of surf.

Originally designed for performance in hollower, more powerful waves, the Ghost has also proven itself in reef breaks, dumpy beachies and point waves.

Based off Pyzel's Short Cut, the Ghost has a more refined outline, with the wide point pushed slightly forward of centre, the nose area kept down and the tail slightly pulled in to help the board fit into a tighter curve.

Wave Range 2–12FT

Pyzel lists the Ghost for a broad range of waves, from 2ft through 12ft.

Rocker Medium

Medium/low through the front half, with plenty of rear rocker curve for turning control.

Bottom Single → Double → Vee

Single concave runs through the bottom with double concave set inside.

Fin Setup Thruster · Quad · 5-Fin

Pyzel lists all three fin configurations for the Ghost.

What makes it work

Speed and hold. Sensitivity and control.

The Ghost's combination of refined outline, forward-pushed thickness, rocker and concave is designed to get the board moving quickly while maintaining control through turns and at speed.

01 · Outline

Refined for tighter curves

The wide point sits slightly forward of centre, while the nose is kept down and the tail is slightly pulled in to help the board fit into a tighter curve.

02 · Thickness

Volume pushed forward

Pyzel pushes the thickness forward to help the Ghost get into waves more easily, while keeping the tail and rails thinner for hold through barrels and turns at speed.

03 · Bottom

Speed with rail-to-rail response

Single concave runs through the entire bottom with double concave set inside, creating speed and lift while allowing quick rail-to-rail transitions.

The Shape

Refined from the Short Cut, built for high performance.

Pyzel based the Ghost on the Short Cut but refined the outline for a tighter, more performance-oriented curve. The wide point remains slightly forward of centre, while the nose area is kept down and the tail pulled in slightly.

The thickness is pushed forward to help with getting into waves, while the tail and rails remain thinner to provide hold through barrels and turns at speed.

Outline Refined Short Cut outline with wide point slightly forward of centre
Rocker Medium / medium-low front half with plenty of rear rocker curve
Bottom Single with Double to Vee
Rails Medium / Standard
Tail Refined, slightly pulled-in tail

Why the Ghost?

High-performance handling with a healthy mix of sensitivity and control.

The Ghost was originally designed for hollower, more powerful waves, but Pyzel says its versatility has seen it work across reef breaks, dumpy beachies and point waves as well.

The combination of the rocker and concave is central to the design. The front half is relatively low to help the board get into waves and pick up speed, while the rear rocker provides turning control and snappy responsiveness.

Who is the Ghost for?

A high-performance board for decent to good waves.

01 · Waves

2–12ft

Pyzel lists the Ghost across a broad 2–12ft range, with the design originally intended for hollower, more powerful surf.

02 · Sizing

From your height upwards

Depending on the waves you want to ride it in, Pyzel recommends ordering your Ghost from your height to 8 inches over.

03 · Everyday shorty comparison

A little more board

Pyzel recommends around ¼–½ inch wider and ⅛–⅜ inch thicker than your everyday shortboard.

Bob's Take

A genuine high-performance design with a remarkably broad brief.

The Ghost has a clear performance focus, but Pyzel's own description makes it clear that the board is not restricted to one type of wave or one level of surfer. It has been used across reef breaks, beach breaks and point waves, with a wave range extending from 2ft to 12ft.

The design details explain why. The front rocker is kept medium/low to help the board get into waves and pick up speed, while the rear has enough curve to give turning control and a snappy response.

Underneath, the single concave and double concave combination creates speed and lift both on a rail and across flatter sections, while allowing quick rail-to-rail transitions.

For sizing, we'd start with your normal shortboard dimensions and then work from Pyzel's own recommendation: anywhere from your height to 8 inches over, around ¼–½ inch wider and ⅛–⅜ inch thicker depending on the conditions you want the Ghost for.
