Lesson 053 — Surfing Crowded Line-Ups
Surfing Crowded Line-Ups
Develop awareness, positioning and etiquette so you can surf confidently around other people.
🎓 Academy Lesson
🎯 Today's Mission
Learn to read the line-up around you, communicate through positioning and avoid creating dangerous situations for yourself or others.
✅ This lesson is for you if...
You feel nervous when a line-up gets busy.
You want to catch waves without getting in another surfer's way.
📚 In This Lesson You'll Learn
- How priority and positioning work in practice.
- How to avoid paddling into someone's line.
- Why predictable behaviour makes everyone safer.
- How to choose less crowded peaks while developing.
👀 Awareness Is Your Superpower
A crowded line-up rewards surfers who look before they move. Before paddling for a wave, check inside, check both shoulders and understand who already has priority.
Predictability matters. If you constantly change direction or paddle across the peak unexpectedly, other surfers cannot anticipate what you will do.
🏄 Bob Gnarly Tip
You don't need to catch every wave. Leaving space for others and choosing waves you can control will make you a better line-up member.
🤝 Give Space
Don't sit directly inside someone who is already established on a peak. Avoid dropping in, don't snake around people and remember that a surfboard carries real momentum.
⚠️ Common Beginner Mistake
Trying to prove you belong by competing for every wave. Good surfers don't need to dominate the line-up.
🇬🇧 UK Surf Tip
Busy UK beaches can become especially crowded during small summer swells. If the main peak feels chaotic, look for a quieter section with waves appropriate to your level.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I accidentally drop in?
Stay calm, exit safely and apologise. Learn from the mistake rather than escalating the situation.
Is it okay to surf a quieter peak?
Absolutely. A quieter, suitable peak can be a much better learning environment.
