🎯 Today's Mission

Make paddling more efficient so you can catch more waves, waste less energy and stay effective throughout a surf session.

✅ This lesson is for you if...

You tire quickly while paddling or arrive at waves already exhausted.

You want more control over where you position yourself.

You want your paddling to support your surfing rather than limit it.

📚 In This Lesson You'll Learn

  • How to find the sweet spot on your board.
  • How to make each paddle stroke efficient.
  • How to keep your board tracking straight.
  • How to pace yourself between sets.
  • How positioning can reduce unnecessary paddling.

🏄 Paddling Is Part of Surfing

Good surfers don't simply paddle harder. They paddle efficiently. Every unnecessary stroke costs energy that you'll need later for take-offs, positioning and getting back out.

Your first job is to find a stable position where the nose isn't digging into the water and the tail isn't sitting excessively low. Small changes in body position can make a surprisingly large difference.

🏄 Bob Gnarly Tip

Don't fight your board. Find the position where it glides naturally, then make your strokes smooth and deliberate.

💪 Efficient Paddle Technique

Reach forward comfortably, enter the water cleanly and pull through with a controlled stroke. Avoid splashing, crossing your arms underneath the board or shortening every stroke because you're rushing.

Keep your body relaxed. Tension wastes energy and makes it harder to maintain rhythm.

🧭 Paddle Straight

A board that constantly veers off line makes every task harder. Uneven strokes can send you away from the peak or make a wave pass underneath you.

Practise a steady rhythm and use your hands and forearms consistently on both sides. When you need to change direction, do it deliberately rather than accidentally.

💡 Did You Know?

Better positioning can save more energy than stronger paddling. If you start closer to the right part of the peak, you may need far fewer strokes to catch the same wave.

🌊 Pace the Session

Surfing is rarely one continuous sprint. Paddle when you need to, relax between sets and avoid spending all your energy chasing every wave.

Watch the lineup. Sometimes the best decision is to wait for the next set instead of paddling hard for a poor-positioned wave.

⚠️ Common Beginner Mistake

Paddling at maximum effort for the entire session. You'll become tired quickly and your technique will deteriorate. Efficient surfers manage their energy.

📋 Your Paddling Checklist

  1. Find your balanced board position.
  2. Keep your strokes smooth and full.
  3. Keep the board tracking straight.
  4. Relax between efforts.
  5. Position yourself so you don't need to paddle unnecessarily.

🇬🇧 UK Surf Tip

Cold water, winter wetsuits and wind can make paddling more demanding. Treat energy management as a core UK surfing skill, not an optional extra.

🌊 One Final Wave…

Strong paddling helps. Smart paddling lasts longer.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I keep losing waves while paddling?

Board position, timing and direction matter as much as effort. Check that the board is balanced and that you're starting your paddle at the right moment.

Should I paddle as hard as possible?

Usually no. Build speed progressively and keep your stroke efficient. Maximum effort is useful when needed, not all the time.

How can I paddle for longer?

Improve technique, position better and pace your efforts. Fitness will build naturally through regular surfing.
