🎯 Today's Mission

Put everything together and catch your first unbroken wave.

✅ This Lesson Is For You If...

You've learned to read waves, paddle, pop up and steer and you're ready to connect those skills.

You want to understand how to approach your first green wave safely and confidently.

📚 In This Lesson You'll Learn

  • What surfers mean by a green wave.
  • How positioning affects your chances.
  • When to paddle and when to pop up.
  • What success looks like on your first unbroken ride.

🌊 What Is a Green Wave?

A green wave is an unbroken wave face. Instead of being pushed straight towards the beach by whitewater, you are travelling along the face of the wave.

📍 Position First

Choose a small, clean wave and position yourself where it is beginning to break. Watch the wave, paddle early and commit once you know the board is moving with it.

🏄 Then Pop Up

As the board starts to glide, complete your pop-up smoothly, keep your weight centred and look along the wave rather than straight down the beach.

💡 Bob Gnarly Tip

Your first green wave may only last a few seconds. That's absolutely fine. The goal is not a long ride — it's learning the feeling of the board travelling down the unbroken face.

🇬🇧 UK Surf Tip

Your first green wave should be small and manageable. If the lineup is crowded or the waves are beyond your ability, wait for a safer opportunity rather than forcing it.

⚠️ Common Beginner Mistake

Trying to take off too late or on a wave that's too steep. Give yourself more time by choosing an appropriate wave and paddling early.

🌊 One Final Wave...

Your first green wave is a milestone, not a performance. Even a few seconds of clean glide means you've learned to work with the energy of the ocean.
