Who are Krux Trucks

Krux Trucks has carved out a unique place in skateboarding history—not by competing directly with the most serious, performance-driven brands, but by embracing creativity, humour, and accessibility while still delivering reliable, high-quality hardware. Emerging from the influential ecosystem of NHS, Inc.—the same Santa Cruz-based distributor behind industry giants like Independent Truck Company—Krux has grown into one of the most recognisable and characterful truck brands in the modern skate scene.

Founded in 1989 by Steve Keenan, Krux began as part of NHS’s expanding portfolio of skateboard brands during a period when skateboarding was undergoing significant transformation. At the time, the industry was dominated by a handful of established truck manufacturers focused heavily on performance and durability. Krux entered the market with those same fundamentals but quickly differentiated itself through design innovation and a distinctly playful identity.

From the outset, Krux trucks were designed by Tim Piumarta, whose engineering approach helped shape the brand’s signature geometry and ride feel. While maintaining the strength and reliability expected of trucks produced under the NHS umbrella, Krux models introduced subtle variations that appealed to skaters looking for smoother turning and a more forgiving, responsive ride. This balance between performance and approachability would become a defining trait of the brand.

By the mid-to-late 1990s, Krux had begun to establish a reputation not just for function, but for personality. Often described as the “cheeky little brother” to Independent, the brand leaned into a lighter, more humorous tone that contrasted with the more hardcore image of other skate companies. This identity was reflected in everything from their colourful graphics to their unconventional marketing campaigns, which embraced absurdity and fun rather than aggression or rebellion.

One of Krux’s most recognisable contributions to skateboard design is the distinctive hole in the hanger, a feature that quickly became synonymous with the brand. While it serves a practical purpose—reducing weight—it also became part of Krux’s playful ethos, often joked about as a bottle opener. This blend of function and humour perfectly encapsulates the company’s approach: serious engineering delivered with a sense of fun.

Technically, Krux has also contributed meaningful refinements to truck design. Their use of down-low kingpins—designed to reduce hang-ups during grinds—helped improve performance for street skaters, particularly in technical ledge and rail skating. Combined with their reputation for smooth turning and consistent geometry, Krux trucks became a dependable choice for skaters who valued control and flow over stiffness.

Throughout the 2000s and beyond, Krux continued to build its identity through a strong and diverse team of riders. The brand has supported influential skateboarders such as Kareem Campbell, Steve Caballero, and Louie Barletta, as well as later generations of creative skaters who embody the brand’s expressive style. This emphasis on individuality over strict technical prowess helped reinforce Krux’s role as a brand that celebrates the artistic and personal side of skateboarding.

Culturally, Krux’s biggest contribution may be its commitment to fun in a sport that often oscillates between rebellion and professionalism. At a time when skateboarding has become increasingly commercialised and competitive, Krux has consistently positioned itself as a reminder of skateboarding’s roots: experimentation, creativity, and enjoyment. Their bold graphics, humorous ads, and unconventional branding have helped them cultivate a loyal following and stand out in a crowded market.

Importantly, Krux has also maintained a strong price-to-performance ratio, making quality trucks more accessible to a wider range of skaters. This accessibility has played a key role in introducing newer skaters to dependable hardware without the premium pricing often associated with top-tier brands.

Today, Krux remains a staple within the global skateboarding industry. Still backed by NHS and sharing manufacturing heritage with some of the most respected names in skateboarding, the brand continues to evolve while staying true to its original ethos. Its trucks are recognised not only for their performance and reliability, but for their unmistakable identity—one that blends engineering with personality.

In the broader context of skateboarding history, Krux Trucks represents an important counterbalance. While many brands focus solely on technical progression or legacy status, Krux has consistently championed the idea that skateboarding should be fun, expressive, and inclusive. That philosophy, as much as any design innovation, is what has cemented Krux’s lasting contribution to the skate scene.
