Gremlin XL

A fuller-volume, shorter and wider Pyzel built for quick acceleration, easy speed and paddle power — without losing the performance side.

FunFormance 1–6ft Thruster · Quad · 5-Fin Small-Wave Performance

The Gremlin XL

More volume. More paddle power. Still properly fun to surf.

Pyzel designed the Gremlin XL for surfers who like the feel of boards such as the Ghost and Phantom, but want something shorter and chunkier for smaller surf. The idea is simple: make weak, slower waves easier to surf without turning the board into something that loses its performance character.

The wider outline and low entry rocker help it generate speed and glide through weaker sections, while curve through the tail rocker keeps the board performance oriented and manoeuvrable.

Wave Range 1–6ft

Designed to make smaller, weaker surf more enjoyable while retaining performance.

Outline Wide & Full

The fuller outline gives the board speed, glide, paddle power and extra volume.

Bottom Single → Double → Vee

Single with double to Vee is designed to combine speed with drive and response.

Fin Setup 3 / 4 / 5 Fin

Pyzel lists thruster, quad (custom order) and five-fin options.

What makes it work

Speed first. Performance still very much included.

Pyzel's current Gremlin XL description centres on extra volume, a shorter and wider outline, low entry rocker and curve through the tail. Together they are intended to make the board accelerate quickly while retaining a lively, performance feel.

01 · Speed

Low entry rocker

The low entry rocker is designed to help the Gremlin XL glide through weaker, slower sections and generate speed without needing perfect waves.

02 · Drive

Wide, fuller outline

The shorter, wider and fuller package gives the board extra paddle power and helps it carry speed through smaller, weaker sections.

03 · Response

Tail rocker & Vee

Curve through the tail rocker and Vee off the tail are there to keep the Gremlin XL responsive, drivey and capable of proper rail surfing.

The shape

A small-wave board that hasn't forgotten how to surf.

The Gremlin XL combines a fuller outline with a low entry rocker for speed and glide, then brings curve back into the tail rocker to preserve manoeuvrability.

Underneath, Pyzel describes a single with double to Vee through the tail. The combination is intended to make the board paddle easily, get up to speed quickly and still feel snappy and drivey once you're on the wave.

Outline Shorter, wider and fuller outline
Rocker Medium nose rocker with medium tail rocker and a low-entry feel
Bottom Single with Double to Vee
Fin options Thruster, quad (custom order) and five-fin

Who is the Gremlin XL for?

One shape, a surprisingly broad range of surfers.

01 · Performance surfer

Step down from a performance board

Pyzel says higher-level surfers can ride the Gremlin XL as much as 4–6 inches below their height and still find a genuine high-performance side to the board.

02 · Intermediate

A daily small-wave option

For an intermediate surfer, Pyzel recommends starting around your own height, while retaining the XL's wider and thicker dimensions.

03 · Transitioning surfer

Moving towards a shorter board

Pyzel also positions the Gremlin XL as a transitional option for surfers ready to move on from a longboard or other larger board into a FunFormance shape.

Bob's Take

The Gremlin XL makes sense for the waves most of us actually get.

The interesting thing about the Gremlin XL is that Pyzel hasn't simply made a bigger, flatter small-wave board. The shape is built around getting easy speed without completely switching off the performance side of the board.

For UK surfers, that makes the concept pretty appealing. If your local forecast is regularly more "fun" than "epic", a board that helps you generate speed, paddle easily and still gives you something to push against when a section appears can make a lot of sense.

The big decision is sizing. Pyzel's own guidance ranges from significantly shorter for experienced surfers to around your height for intermediate surfers, while the XL dimensions deliberately stay wider and thicker. We'd use the volume calculator as a starting point rather than simply copying somebody else's dimensions.
