🎯 Today's Mission

Understand how the bottom turn redirects your speed and sets up the next section of the wave.

✅ This lesson is for you if...

You can take off and trim but feel like your ride loses direction after take-off.

You want to connect the lower part of the wave to the face more deliberately.

You're ready to understand one of surfing's most important foundational turns.

📚 In This Lesson You'll Learn

  • What the bottom turn actually does.
  • How your eyes and body initiate the movement.
  • How rail engagement affects direction.
  • Why speed and control must work together.
  • How to practise a smaller version on suitable waves.

🌊 What Is a Bottom Turn?

After take-off, the board naturally wants to travel down the wave. A bottom turn redirects that movement back up and across the face.

It is the bridge between your take-off and whatever comes next: trimming, a top turn, a cutback or simply staying connected to the wave.

🏄 Bob Gnarly Tip

Don't think of the bottom turn as a separate trick. Think of it as the movement that gives the rest of the ride direction.

👀 Look Up the Face

Your eyes should identify where you want to go next. That decision helps your shoulders and hips rotate, allowing the board to follow.

Looking at the bottom of the wave can keep you stuck there. Look through the turn towards the section you want to reach.

⚖️ Engage the Rail Gradually

A bottom turn is not simply stomping on the tail. Pressure is progressive. As you lean and rotate, the rail engages with the wave face and the board changes direction.

On larger or faster waves the movement can become more powerful, but the principle remains the same.

💡 Did You Know?

Many advanced manoeuvres are easier once the bottom turn is working because the surfer has already created the right direction and speed before reaching the next section.

⚠️ Common Beginner Mistake

Trying to force a huge bottom turn on a weak wave. Start with small direction changes and learn to feel the board respond.

🎯 Bottom Turn Progression

  1. Take off on a manageable wave.
  2. Look across the face.
  3. Let your shoulders and hips rotate.
  4. Apply controlled pressure through your feet.
  5. Allow the board to redirect.
  6. Return to trim and continue the ride.

🇬🇧 UK Surf Tip

Use clean, shoulder-high or smaller waves with enough face to practise. You don't need powerful surf to understand the movement.

🌊 One Final Wave…

The bottom turn is where a straight ride starts becoming surfing.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my board slow down in the bottom turn?

You may be over-pressuring the tail or making the turn too large for the wave. Keep the movement smooth and appropriate to the wave's energy.

Do I need a hard board to learn a bottom turn?

No. A stable board can teach you the movement, although the response will differ from a shorter performance board.

Where should I look?

Look towards the section you want to reach. Your body and board tend to follow your visual target.

📚 Lesson Summary

  • ✅ The bottom turn redirects your take-off.
  • ✅ Your eyes help set the direction.
  • ✅ Rotation and foot pressure work together.
  • ✅ Smooth rail engagement preserves control.
  • ✅ The movement connects the bottom of the wave to the face.
