🎯 Today's Mission

Improve the quality of your take-offs by choosing a better starting position, timing your paddle and committing to the wave with control.

✅ This lesson is for you if...

You often catch waves too late or feel rushed as you stand up.

You find yourself taking off too far behind or too far in front of the peak.

You want your take-off to set up the rest of your ride.

📚 In This Lesson You'll Learn

  • How positioning changes take-off difficulty.
  • How to match your paddle speed to the wave.
  • Why commitment matters once the wave lifts you.
  • How to stand up with a line already in mind.
  • How to improve take-offs without chasing bigger waves.

📍 Position Before the Wave Arrives

A good take-off begins several seconds before you paddle. Your position in relation to the peak determines the angle, speed and amount of time you have after standing.

Use what you learned in Lesson 046. Choose your direction, then position so the wave can carry you that way.

🏄 Bob Gnarly Tip

Don't fix a poor position with a frantic paddle. Move yourself into a better position before the wave arrives.

🏄 Build Speed Gradually

When the wave begins to lift your board, increase your paddle effort smoothly. A few committed strokes are usually more useful than a long burst of panic paddling.

Once you feel the wave taking the board, keep your momentum and make the transition to your feet decisively.

🎯 Commit to Your Direction

Hesitation is one of the biggest take-off killers. If you've chosen left, look left. If you've chosen right, look right. Your body should already be preparing for the line you'll take.

💡 Did You Know?

A clean take-off can make an average wave feel better than a powerful wave taken from the wrong position.

⚠️ Common Beginner Mistake

Waiting until the wave is already steep before trying to stand. Start your take-off while the board is moving with the wave, not after the wave has passed underneath you.

🧩 Take-Off Sequence

  1. Watch the wave develop.
  2. Choose your direction.
  3. Position yourself appropriately.
  4. Paddle smoothly as the wave approaches.
  5. Feel the board accelerate.
  6. Commit to the pop-up and look down the line.

🇬🇧 UK Surf Tip

On smaller UK waves, don't sit too far outside and expect the wave to reach you with power. Learn to position closer to the useful part of the break while maintaining safe margins.

🌊 One Final Wave…

A good take-off isn't a lucky moment. It's the result of good positioning and timing.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I keep missing waves?

You may be too far from the peak, paddling too late or choosing waves that don't have enough energy for your position. Watch the break and adjust.

Should I paddle before the wave reaches me?

Usually yes, but the timing depends on the wave. Build momentum as the wave approaches and commit when you feel it begin to lift the board.

Why do I fall during the pop-up?

Common causes include standing too late, looking down, or losing the board's direction. Keep your eyes up and commit to the line.
