Who Are Alder Wetsuits?
Alder Wetsuits was founded in the early 1970s, a time when the sport of surfing was just beginning to gain traction in the UK. The company's humble beginnings were in a small workshop in Cornwall. Where a team of passionate surfers and suit enthusiasts set out to create products that would not only keep them warm in the chilly British waters. But also provide the performance and durability they craved.
From the outset, Alder Wetsuits was driven by a commitment to quality and innovation. The company's founders understood that the key to unlocking the full potential of British surfing lay in developing wetsuits that could withstand the harsh conditions of the North Atlantic. With this in mind, they began experimenting with new materials, construction techniques, and design features that would set their products apart from the competition.
As Alder Wetsuits grew, so too did their reputation for excellence. The company's wetsuits quickly became the go-to choice for many of the UK's top surfers.
One of the key innovations that set Alder apart was their use of neoprene, a synthetic rubber material that had just recently been introduced to the suit market. By carefully refining the composition and construction of their neoprene, Alder was able to create wetsuits that were not only more durable but also more comfortable and responsive than anything else on the market.
Over the years, Alder continued to push the boundaries of wetsuit design, introducing features like seamless construction. Also strategic panel placement, and advanced insulation systems. These innovations helped to keep Alder at the forefront of the industry. Cementing their reputation as a brand that was truly dedicated to the needs of the modern surfer.
When To Wear a 3/2 Wetsuit In The UK
A 3/2mm wetsuit is a type of neoprene suit used in watersports. The numbers refer to the thickness of the neoprene in millimetres. The "3" means the material is 3mm thick around the torso. The "2" indicates 2mm thickness in the arms and legs. This design helps balance warmth and flexibility.
In the UK, a 3/2mm suit is mainly used in late spring, summer, and early autumn. Water temperatures during these months usually range from 14°C to 20°C. The thicker neoprene around the chest helps retain core warmth. The thinner arms and legs allow better movement for paddling and swimming.
These suits are popular among surfers, paddleboarders, and swimmers in warmer UK waters. In places like Cornwall or Wales, a 3/2mm suit is ideal during sunny summer days. However, in northern UK regions, even summer sea temperatures may require a thicker suit. It's important to check local sea temperatures before choosing a wetsuit.
The suit should fit tightly to trap a thin layer of water against the skin. This water layer warms up from body heat and provides insulation. If the suit is too loose, cold water will flush through and reduce its effectiveness.
A 3/2mm suit is usually not suitable for winter use in the UK. During colder months, sea temperatures drop below 10°C. For those conditions, a 5mm or thicker wetsuit with boots, gloves, and a hood is recommended.
Always rinse the suit after use to extend its life.
