The Precious

One board. A whole lot of possibilities.

Pyzel created the Precious after a friend asked for a one-board quiver that could travel around the world and handle a wide range of surf. Its starting point was the Gremlin — a shape known for speed, versatility and fun — but the brief was to make it sleeker, narrower and more performance-oriented, with less chunky rails.

The answer is a step-railed, concave-decked design. The step-deck helps retain foam through the board while allowing a more sensitive rail, and the concave deck adds stability and sensitivity with a potential bonus in paddle power.

Wave Range 1–8ft

Designed to carry speed in weaker sections and remain responsive when the surf improves.

Outline Sleek & Pulled In

Narrower and more pulled in than the Gremlin, with a more performance-oriented feel.

Bottom Single → Double → Vee

The concave bottom provides lift and drive, with vee helping the board roll from rail to rail.

Fin Setup 3 / 4 / 5 Fin

Ride it as a thruster, quad or five-fin; Pyzel also mentions a 2+1 setup.

What makes it work

Keep the foam. Refine the feel.

The Precious is built around a useful balance: enough foam to paddle easily and carry speed, paired with a step-deck and thinner rails that give the board a more sensitive, high-performance feel.

01 · Volume

Step-deck design

The step-deck lets Pyzel retain foam through the board while reducing the rail's overall chunkiness. That helps keep paddle-friendly volume without making the rail feel overly thick.

02 · Sensitivity

Concave deck and step rails

The concave deck is intended to add stability and sensitivity. Because the deck dips, the thickness measurement can look modest even though the board carries useful volume.

03 · Speed & response

Gremlin DNA, refined

A flatter entry rocker helps acceleration, while subtle tail curve supports quick, responsive turns. The narrower outline carries speed through slower sections while giving the board a sleeker feel.

The shape

A refined outline with volume where it counts.

Compared with the Gremlin, the Precious has a narrower, more pulled-in outline. Its flatter entry rocker and subtle tail curve are designed to help it accelerate easily, carry speed through weaker sections and turn quickly.

Underneath, Pyzel specifies a single with double concave transitioning to vee. The wide tailblock carries ample vee to help the board tip onto its rail, even at higher speeds.

Outline Narrower and more pulled in than the Gremlin
Rails Thin, step-railed profile
Rocker Medium nose rocker and medium tail rocker
Bottom Single with double concave to vee
Fin options Thruster, quad and five-fin; Pyzel also mentions 2+1

Who is the Precious for?

For surfers looking for one versatile performance board.

01 · All-rounder

A one-board quiver

The Precious was conceived as a board that could travel and cover a broad range of conditions, rather than being limited to one narrow type of wave.

02 · Gremlin fan

Similar speed, sleeker feel

If the Gremlin concept appeals but you want a narrower outline and a more sensitive performance rail, the Precious takes that DNA in a refined direction.

03 · Volume-conscious surfer

Choose by volume, not thickness alone

Pyzel specifically advises sizing by volume because the concave deck can make the board sound thin on paper while it still carries more foam than that measurement suggests.

Sizing

Precious dimensions.

Standard stock dimensions published by Pyzel. Use volume as the main reference when comparing sizes, particularly because of the concave deck.

Bob's Take

The Precious makes a compelling case for being your everyday performance board.

What makes the Precious interesting is how it tackles a familiar trade-off. A board with plenty of foam can paddle well and carry speed, but thick rails can feel less sensitive. Pyzel's step-deck and concave-deck design are intended to keep useful volume while refining the rail feel.

Its Gremlin roots point towards easy acceleration and versatility, while the narrower outline and tail curve give it a more performance-led character. That makes the Precious worth considering if you want one board for a wide range of sessions, rather than a specialist for only small or only powerful surf.

Our advice: compare sizes by volume first, then consider how the length and width suit your surfing. Pyzel recommends riding a few inches above or below your height depending on ability, and adding around 1/2" to 1" of width compared with your usual shortboard.
