Pyzel Gremlin surfboard being surfed in fun small waves

Gremlin

A shorter, wider Pyzel built to make everyday waves more fun — with the speed and manoeuvrability to keep the performance side alive.

The Gremlin

Less-than-epic days just got a lot more interesting.

Pyzel designed the Gremlin for surfers who like the feel of boards such as the Ghost and Phantom, but want something shorter and chunkier for smaller surf. The idea is simple: make weak, slower waves easier to surf without turning the board into something that loses its performance character.

The wider outline and low entry rocker help the board generate speed and glide, while curve through the tail rocker keeps it lively and manoeuvrable.

Wave Range 1–6ft

Designed to make smaller, weaker surf more enjoyable while retaining performance.

Outline Wide & Full

A generous outline gives the board speed, glide and easy paddling.

Bottom Single → Double → Vee

A progressive bottom contour helps combine speed with drive and response.

Fin Setup 3 / 4 / 5 Fin

Thruster, quad and five-fin options are listed by Pyzel.

What makes it work

Speed first. Performance still very much included.

Pyzel's current Gremlin description points to a combination of width, low entry rocker and tail curve designed to make the board easy to get moving without making it feel flat and lifeless under your feet.

01 · Speed

Low entry rocker

The low entry rocker is designed to help the Gremlin glide through weaker, slower sections and generate speed without needing perfect waves.

02 · Drive

Wide, fuller outline

The fuller outline gives the board a generous platform for paddling and wave-catching while helping it carry speed through everyday surf.

03 · Response

Tail rocker & Vee

Curve through the tail rocker and Vee off the tail are there to keep the Gremlin responsive, drivey and capable of proper rail surfing.

The shape

A small-wave board that hasn't forgotten how to surf.

The Gremlin combines a fuller outline with a low entry rocker for speed and glide, then brings curve back into the tail rocker to preserve manoeuvrability.

Underneath, Pyzel describes a single-to-double concave with Vee through the tail. The combination is intended to make the board paddle easily, get up to speed quickly and still feel snappy and drivey once you're on the wave.

Outline Full / wider outline
Rocker Low entry rocker with curve retained through the tail
Bottom Single to double concave with Vee through the tail
Fin options Thruster, quad and five-fin

Who is the Gremlin for?

One shape, a surprisingly broad range of surfers.

01 · Performance surfer

Step down from a performance board

Pyzel says higher-level surfers can ride the Gremlin 4–6 inches shorter than their height and still find a genuine high-performance side to the board.

02 · Intermediate

A daily small-wave option

For an intermediate surfer, Pyzel recommends starting around your own height, giving the board enough length while retaining its fuller, faster character.

03 · Transitioning surfer

Moving towards a shorter board

Pyzel also positions the Gremlin as a transitional option for surfers ready to move on from a longboard or other larger board into a FunFormance shape.

Bob's Take

The Gremlin makes sense for the waves most of us actually get.

The interesting thing about the Gremlin is that Pyzel hasn't simply made a bigger, flatter small-wave board. The shape is built around getting easy speed without completely switching off the performance side of the board.

For UK surfers, that makes the concept pretty appealing. If your local forecast is regularly more "fun" than "epic", a board that helps you generate speed, paddle easily and still gives you something to push against when a section appears can make a lot of sense.

The big decision is sizing. Pyzel's own guidance ranges from significantly shorter for experienced surfers to around your height for intermediate surfers, so we'd use the volume calculator as a starting point rather than simply copying somebody else's dimensions.
