The Astro Pop

A fast, easy-paddling Funformance shape built to bring speed and spark to weaker waves without losing its performance edge.

Funformance 1–6FT Thruster · Quad · 5-Fin

The Astro Pop

Speed, easy paddling and plenty of fun.

Built off the Astro, the Astro Pop takes the retro-fish idea and pulls the nose and tail in, adding a small wing near the tail to create more curve through the outline.

Pyzel says that extra curve adds manoeuvrability without sacrificing the speed that makes the design work so well in weaker surf.

Underneath, a deep double concave runs through to vee at the tail, helping the board get up on top of the water in slower waves while still allowing it to tip easily onto the rail at higher speeds.

Wave Range 1–6FT

Pyzel lists the Astro Pop for waves from around 1ft through 6ft.

Rocker Medium Low

The flatter entry rocker helps make the Astro Pop easy to paddle and get moving.

Bottom Double → Vee

A deep double concave runs through to vee off the tail.

Fin Setup Thruster · Quad · 5-Fin

Pyzel recommends the Astro Pop as a quad for speed, while the stock five-fin setup adds versatility.

A little more spark for everyday waves, with the speed and easy paddling to keep the fun going when the surf gets softer.

What makes it work

Speed and flow. Curve and manoeuvrability.

The Astro Pop takes the basic speed and paddling strengths of the Astro and adds a more pulled-in outline, a winged tail and a deep double-to-vee bottom to make the board both fast and manoeuvrable.

01 · Outline

Pulled in for more curve

The nose and tail are pulled in from the Astro, while a small wing helps pull in the final four inches of the tail and creates more curve through the outline.

02 · Bottom

Deep double into vee

The deep double concave helps the board get up on top of the water in weaker waves before flowing into vee through the tail.

03 · Nose & Rocker

Easy paddle, easy speed

A mild beak nose keeps thickness into the nose, while the flatter entry rocker helps the Astro Pop paddle easily and get moving quickly.

The Shape

Built from the Astro, tuned for speed and manoeuvrability.

The Astro Pop starts with the retro-fish DNA of Pyzel's Astro, then brings the nose and tail in for a more refined outline.

The small wing near the tail pulls in the final section of the outline, creating more curve and giving the board additional manoeuvrability without giving away its speed.

Category Funformance
Outline More pulled-in nose and tail with a small tail wing
Nose Mild beak nose
Rocker Medium low
Bottom Double to Vee
Rails Medium / Standard

Why the Astro Pop?

Speed when the waves are good. Easy fun when they're not.

The Astro Pop is designed to bring more life to smaller, weaker waves without turning into an overly chunky small-wave board.

The flatter entry rocker and mild beak nose help with paddling, while the deep double concave gives the board lift and speed once you're moving.

The pulled-in outline and tail wing then add curve and manoeuvrability, helping the board remain lively rather than simply fast in a straight line.

Who is the Astro Pop for?

A Funformance board for a wide range of surfers and smaller waves.

Bob's Take

A small-wave board that still feels like a proper surfboard.

The Astro Pop makes a lot of sense if you're looking for more speed and easier paddling without simply adding a huge amount of board.

The flatter entry rocker and mild beak nose help with getting into waves, while the deep double concave creates the lift and speed Pyzel is looking for in weaker conditions.

What keeps it interesting is the outline. The pulled-in nose and tail, combined with the small wing, give the Astro Pop considerably more curve and manoeuvrability than its small-wave brief might suggest.

Pyzel's own sizing advice is straightforward: ride it as short as you want, go around ¾–1 inch wider than your everyday shortboard, and use enough thickness to give yourself a little more volume.
