Researching a New Surf Spot
Learn what to discover before you paddle out somewhere unfamiliar.

Research one unfamiliar break and identify its wave type, hazards, access, currents, local etiquette and suitable conditions.
🔎 What to Research
- Beach orientation and swell direction.
- Wave type, seabed and likely breaking areas.
- Tides, currents and entry/exit points.
- Rocks, reefs, rips, cliffs, river mouths and other hazards.
- Local rules, restrictions and etiquette.
- What equipment suits the spot.
🇬🇧 UK Surf Tip
Use local knowledge wherever possible. Surf schools, lifeguards, local clubs and experienced surfers can provide context that a forecast cannot.
🏄 Bob Gnarly Tip
Google Maps can show the coastline, but it cannot teach you how the water moves. Research the ocean, not just the location.
⚠️ Common Mistake
Assuming a famous spot is automatically suitable. Reputation, size and difficulty are not the same thing as suitability for you.
🧠 New-Spot Checklist
Before surfing, you should be able to answer: Where do I enter? Where do I exit? Where are the hazards? Where do waves break? Where is the current? What happens if conditions increase?
