LESSON 068
Adapting to Unfamiliar Waves
Use observation, patience and positioning to make a new break feel more understandable.
🎯 Today's Mission
Spend ten minutes watching a new break before surfing. Identify the main peak, channels, sets, currents and safest route in.
🌊 Observe Before You Commit
A familiar technique does not guarantee familiar results. Wave shape, water movement, depth and timing can all change at a new spot.
- Watch several sets.
- Find where waves consistently break.
- Watch other surfers' entry and exit routes.
- Notice where water moves.
- Start conservatively and build confidence.
🏄 Bob Gnarly Tip
Your first session at a new break is partly a research session. You don't need to surf every wave.
🇬🇧 UK Surf Tip
On unfamiliar UK beaches, pay close attention to rips, tide movement, exposed rocks and changing banks. A beach can look simple from shore and behave very differently in the water.
⚠️ Common Mistake
Trying to surf the same way you surf at home. Adapt your position, wave selection and expectations to the new environment.
🧠 The Adaptability Loop
Observe → choose → try → evaluate → adjust. Repeat it throughout the session.
➡️ Next Step
Now prepare the practical side of travel: boards, wetsuits, spares, transport and logistics.
