Lesson 024 — Where Should I Sit? Surf Positioning for Beginners
🎓 Learn to Surf UK Academy
🎯 Today's Mission
Understand where to position yourself, how to find a beginner-friendly peak and how to stay aware of other surfers.
✅ This lesson is for you if...
You paddle out and aren't sure where to wait for waves.
You catch waves but struggle to get back into a useful position afterwards.
You want to understand the beginner-friendly part of a lineup.
📚 In This Lesson You'll Learn
- What a peak is.
- Why channels and less crowded areas can help beginners.
- How to position yourself without blocking other surfers.
- Why watching the ocean saves energy.
- How to return to your position after a wave.
Where Should a Beginner Sit?
Good positioning can make surfing dramatically easier. If you sit too far inside, waves may break on top of you. Too far outside and you may miss the waves you are capable of catching.
Look for a place where waves are breaking consistently, the water is manageable and you have enough space to surf without interfering with others.
🌊 Find the peak
The peak is the part of the wave that begins breaking first. It can be a useful reference point, but beginners should avoid sitting directly in the busiest part of a crowded peak.
↔️ Find space
A slightly quieter shoulder can give you more room to practise and reduce the pressure of navigating around experienced surfers.
🏄 Bob Gnarly Tip
Don't chase every wave. Spend time watching. You'll save energy and start to see patterns in where the good beginner waves are appearing.
Positioning Is Also About Safety
Where you sit affects everyone around you. Keep enough space between yourself and other surfers, avoid paddling directly into someone's path and remember that a long beginner board needs plenty of room.
💡 Did You Know?
Experienced surfers often spend more time watching than beginners realise. They are constantly reading the sets, currents, peaks and other surfers before committing to a wave.
⚠️ Common Beginner Mistake
Paddling straight back to the peak after every ride without checking what is coming. Look around first and choose the safest route back out.
🌊 UK Surf Tip
Beach breaks can shift with tide and swell. If the peak moves, move with it. Don't assume the best take-off spot will stay in exactly the same place all session.
🌊 One Final Wave…
Good positioning means fewer wasted paddles, more manageable waves and a safer session for everyone.
📚 Lesson Summary
- ✅ Find manageable waves and enough space.
- ✅ Watch before paddling.
- ✅ Think about other surfers as well as your own wave.
- ✅ Reposition safely after each ride.
