🌊 Module 4
Surfing the Green Wave
Lesson 025 of 025

✅ This lesson is for you if...

You want to know what a good beginner surf session should actually look like.

You've learned the individual skills but want to put them together without overthinking.

📚 In This Lesson You'll Learn

  • How to prepare before entering the water.
  • How to choose your position and waves.
  • How to paddle, take off and choose a direction.
  • How to stay relaxed while surfing the face.
  • How to finish a ride and reset for the next wave.

Your First Real Surf Session

By now you know how to read basic waves, paddle into them, stand up, choose left or right, make small turns and position yourself more effectively.

The final step is learning how those skills fit together. A good surf session isn't a series of perfect waves. It's a sequence of simple decisions repeated calmly.

1️⃣ Before You Paddle Out

Check the conditions, identify where waves are breaking, look for hazards and watch the water for a few minutes. Make sure your equipment is secure and suitable for the conditions.

2️⃣ Find Your Position

Choose a manageable area with enough space. Watch the sets and avoid paddling into another surfer's line.

3️⃣ Choose Your Wave

Don't catch everything. Look for a wave that matches your ability and has a clean, open shoulder.

4️⃣ Paddle and Take Off

Paddle with purpose, feel the wave lift the board, then pop up smoothly and look towards your chosen line.

5️⃣ Surf, Finish, Reset

Stay relaxed, make small adjustments and finish the ride safely. Then return to position using the safest route.

🏄 Bob Gnarly Tip

One good wave is enough. Don't judge a session by the number of waves you catch. If you learn something from one wave, the session was worthwhile.

💡 Did You Know?

Experienced surfers often have very ordinary waves between their best rides. The skill is being ready and positioned when the right wave finally arrives.

⚠️ Common Beginner Mistake

Trying to surf for too long after you're tired. Fatigue makes paddling, balance and decision-making harder. Finish while you're still enjoying yourself.

🌊 UK Surf Tip

Conditions can change quickly on UK beaches. Keep checking the tide, wind, swell and crowd throughout your session rather than assuming the conditions will stay the same.

🌊 One Final Wave…

This is the point where the lessons start becoming surfing. You don't need perfection — you need a repeatable process, good judgement and the confidence to keep learning.

📚 Module 4 Summary

  • ✅ You can now identify a basic surfing line.
  • ✅ You understand how to choose left or right.
  • ✅ You have the foundations of steering.
  • ✅ You understand beginner surf positioning.
  • ✅ You can combine these skills into a real surf-session routine.
