LESSON 009
What Equipment Will My Surf School Provide?
Know exactly what your surf school normally supplies, what you should bring and why you don't need to buy expensive gear before your first lesson.
🎯 Today's Mission
Understand exactly what a beginner surf school normally provides so you can arrive at your lesson relaxed and prepared.
📚 In This Lesson You'll Learn
- What equipment is normally included.
- Why schools use large beginner-friendly boards.
- What wetsuit equipment you may receive.
- What you need to bring yourself.
- Why waiting before buying your own gear is usually sensible.
What Equipment Will My Surf School Provide?
Surfing can look like an expensive sport. There are boards, wetsuits, leashes, fins, boots, gloves, bags and plenty of accessories. But a beginner lesson is designed specifically so you don't need to own all of that.
Most professional UK surf schools provide the specialist equipment required for the session. Your job is to arrive ready to learn.
Don't buy a surfboard before your first lesson just because you think you need one. Let your first lesson teach you what you actually need.
🏄 Bob Gnarly Tip
Experience first, equipment second. After a few sessions you'll understand your ability, the local waves and the type of board that will actually help you progress.
🏄 Your Beginner Surfboard
Your school will normally provide a large foam or soft-top surfboard. These boards are wider, thicker and more stable than performance boards, making them ideal for learning balance, paddling and the pop-up.
The extra volume also helps the board catch smaller waves more easily, which means more practice and more fun.
⚠️ Common Beginner Mistake
Assuming the smallest board is the best board because experienced surfers use one. Short performance boards are designed for surfers with developed skills. Beginners normally progress faster on larger, more stable equipment.
🩱 Your Wetsuit
A wetsuit is normally included and will be selected for the season and local water temperature. Your instructor or school staff will help you find the right size.
Depending on conditions, the school may also provide boots, gloves or a hood. Requirements vary by location and season, so follow the school's instructions.
🪢 Leash, Fins & Other Board Equipment
Your surfboard will normally already have its fins fitted and will be supplied with a suitable leash. Your instructor will explain how to attach and handle the leash safely before you enter the water.
You don't need to understand surfboard design before your first lesson. That's part of what the Academy is here to teach.
🇬🇧 UK Surf Tip
Ask your surf school exactly what is included when you book. Equipment packages vary, particularly for boots, gloves and winter accessories.
🎒 What Do You Need to Bring?
- Swimwear.
- Towel.
- Warm clothes for afterwards.
- Comfortable footwear.
- Water and sunscreen.
- A bag for wet clothing.
Leave valuables and unnecessary jewellery at home wherever possible.
👨🏫 Your Instructor Is Part of the Equipment Package Too
The most valuable thing your surf school provides isn't something you can put in a bag. It's experienced coaching.
Your instructor will explain the equipment, assess the conditions, teach safety, help with positioning and give you feedback throughout the lesson. That knowledge can save you months of frustration when you eventually buy your own board.
💙 Remember...
You don't need your own board, wetsuit or collection of accessories to start surfing. A good beginner school will have the essential kit ready for you.
