Fins might look like small pieces of plastic, fibreglass or composite material bolted onto the bottom of your board. But they have a huge influence on how that board feels under your feet — from drive and hold to speed, release and turning response.
How much difference can a set of fins really make?
Quite a lot. Your fins work with the board’s rails, outline, rocker and bottom contours to control how the board interacts with the water. Change the fin setup and you can change the character of the same board dramatically.

What Do Surfboard Fins Actually Do?
At the simplest level, fins help your surfboard track, resist sideways slip and change direction. Without some form of lateral resistance, a surfboard would have a much harder time converting your weight shifts into controlled turns.
Think about what happens when you paddle or glide straight. The board wants to move forwards. As soon as you lean onto a rail and redirect the board, the fins interact with the water and help provide resistance against sideways movement.

Fins give the board something to push against, helping it maintain direction and hold a line on the wave face.

How Surfboard Fins Work

FCS / FCS II
FCS uses a plug-based system. FCS II is a tool-less system designed around inserting the fin into the box and securing it through the system's engineered fit.
Futures
Futures uses a full-base fin that locks into a corresponding box in the board. The system has its own distinct construction and installation method.
