The Red Tiger is John John Florence’s new High Performance shortboard, unlike anything we’ve released before. It’s the ultimate performance machine for small, medium, slower, and weaker waves, based on John’s simple guidance: make it fast and fun.
The idea for this board started when John rode different fun boards during breaks from competing. His favorite last year was the White Tiger (5’6″), our flat rockered FunFormance board. He asked me to turn that design into something he could take back on tour for weaker waves.
The outline is a bit plump for a High Performance surfboard. However, the wide point sits an inch behind center. This keeps the emphasis on surfing off the mid to back half of the board. The wider tail-block squash helps maintain lift and drive, creating pop for aerials. A moderate hip near the front fins creates a pivot point for tighter turns and release in the lip.
The rocker and bottom contour set this board apart. It’s our flattest high-performance board, providing easy, consistent speed. The rocker works in flat sections and weak, small waves. Flat rocker can feel sticky, so we use a single to double concave through the front 2/3 of the board. It transitions into a double concave/deep vee combo through the fins and tail. This bottom allows easy rail-to-rail rolling and vertical surfing, even in tight, pockety waves.
The thickness flow (foil) from nose to tail is balanced. The front is slightly thinner than the back half. The deck is flat-ish, with more volume near the rails. The rails are full just in from the outline, under the ball of your hand, but tapered for sensitivity and bite.
Ride the Red Tiger about an inch shorter than your usual High Performance Shortboard, and a bit wider. Volume should be similar, but go up a ½ to 1 liter for more zing in weaker waves. The board will elevate your everyday sessions and outperform other performance boards in under-par waves. It still delivers when the surf turns on!

The History of Pyzel Surfboards
Pyzel Surfboards is a renowned brand in the surfboard industry. It was founded by master shaper Jon Pyzel in the 1990s. Based in Hawaii, the brand quickly gained recognition for its innovation and high-performance designs. Jon Pyzel's deep understanding of the ocean and surfboard crafting was the foundation for the company’s success.
Pyzel's journey began with a passion for surfing, which led him to shape boards for himself and others. Over the years, his designs evolved, offering surfers new ways to push their limits. Pyzel Surfboards became well-known for their ability to adapt to the changing demands of the surfing world. Their boards are famous for speed, control, and precision.
One of the pivotal moments in Pyzel's history came when John John Florence, one of the world’s best surfers, began riding his boards. Florence, a native of Hawaii, was already making waves in the surfing world when he partnered with Pyzel. The collaboration proved to be a perfect match. Pyzel’s high-performance boards and Florence’s exceptional talent created a dynamic duo.
John John Florence’s success on the world tour, paired with his use of Pyzel boards, greatly boosted the brand’s visibility. Their relationship was more than just professional; it became a symbol of innovation and excellence in the surf industry.
Over the years, Pyzel has continued to shape boards tailored to Florence's specific needs. Their ongoing partnership has led to the development of signature models, like the "Ghost" and the "JJF," both of which are tailored to competitive and big-wave surfing. These boards offer unmatched performance and have been key in Florence’s continued dominance in the sport.
Pyzel’s relationship with John John Florence is ongoing and has shaped both brands’ identities. Florence’s success continues to push the boundaries of surfboard design, while Pyzel’s expertise enhances his performance. Together, they have redefined what’s possible on a surfboard.
