Wetsuit Hood & Surf Hats
Stay warm and surf longer with the help of a wetsuit hood and caps! Designed to prevent that dreaded ice cream head freeze, these hoods come in two thickness options and can be integrated into your wet suit or worn independently.
Neoprene material traps in heat, allowing for comfortable duck diving and cold water surfing. While wearing a hood may limit neck movement and hearing, the benefits of warmth outweigh these minor inconveniences.
And don't forget, keeping your head warm is crucial for regulating body heat and concentration. The top brands now offer advanced features like smooth skin neoprene, drawstring cords, and improved seals for maximum performance. At Bob Gnarly Surf we put our hood range to the test while surfing in the coldest winter months. Trust us, they work!
Staying warm and protected in cold surf is vital. That’s where wetsuit hoods and surf hats come in. These accessories help regulate your body temperature and shield you from sun, wind, or chilly water. Choosing the right one can boost comfort and extend your session.
Wetsuit hoods are essential for cold-water surfers. They trap heat by covering the head and neck. Neoprene is the common material, offering both flexibility and insulation. Thickness usually ranges from 2mm to 5mm, depending on water temperature.
There are three main styles of wetsuit hoods. First, the *integrated hood* is built into a wetsuit. It offers maximum seal and warmth with fewer gaps. Second, the bibbed hood has an extended flap tucked into the wetsuit. This prevents cold water flushing in. Third, the *standard hood* fits like a snug cap without a bib. It’s quick to put on and works well in mild cold.
Some hoods include a peak or brim. This helps keep water off the face and reduces glare. Most also have a chin strap or face seal to improve fit and insulation. In icy surf, a tighter seal protects better but may feel restrictive. A good hood balances warmth with comfort.
Surf hats, on the other hand, are more about sun protection and comfort in warmer conditions. They shield the face, ears, and neck from UV rays. They also help prevent sunstroke and sunburn after hours in direct sunlight.
There are two main types of surf hats. *Wide-brim hats* offer full face and neck coverage. The brim stays secure in wind and water. These hats are ideal for longer surf sessions under harsh sun. *Cap-style hats* resemble baseball caps with added ear flaps or chin straps. They’re lighter, less bulky, and great for everyday surf in warmer weather.
Surf hats are made from quick-drying, lightweight fabrics. Many feature mesh panels for airflow and drainage. A secure strap under the chin keeps the hat in place, even during wipeouts. Some are designed to float, which helps prevent losing them in the surf.
Certain hats double as helmets with built-in protection. These are popular in reef-heavy surf zones or when learning new tricks. While they offer less warmth than hoods, they’re better for tropical conditions.
Each piece of surf headwear serves a unique purpose. Hoods lock in heat during cold sessions. Surf hats protect against sun and reduce glare in bright light. Your location and climate determine what you need most.
If you regularly surf cold waters, a good neoprene hood is a must. Match its thickness to the rest of your wetsuit. Consider how it fits with your wetsuit collar to avoid flushing. For warmer locations, invest in a reliable surf hat with UPF protection. The right hat shields more than sunglasses ever could.
Whether battling freezing winds or chasing waves under the midday sun, headwear helps you surf longer. Choose the right tool for your conditions, and you'll stay safer, sharper, and more stoked.
