Thinking About Surfing
Lesson 5 of 10

✅ This lesson is for you if...

You've booked your first surf lesson and want to know exactly what to expect.

You're excited but a little nervous about your first time in the water.

You want to arrive prepared and confident rather than unsure.

📚 In This Lesson You'll Learn

  • What happens when you arrive at a surf school.
  • What equipment you'll usually be given.
  • How instructors prepare you before entering the water.
  • What your first waves will feel like.
  • How to make the most of your first surfing experience.

What Happens in Your First Surf Lesson?

Booking your first surf lesson is exciting, but feeling nervous is completely normal. Professional surf schools are designed for complete beginners and the session is carefully structured to build confidence one step at a time.

Your first surf lesson isn't about perfection — it's about discovering just how much fun surfing can be.

🏄 Bob Gnarly Tip

Everyone feels nervous before their first lesson. Once you get into the water, those nerves usually disappear surprisingly quickly.

Arriving at the Surf School

Most schools ask you to arrive around 20–30 minutes early. You'll check in, meet your instructor, get changed and receive an introduction to the session.

Your instructor will explain the conditions, answer questions and make sure everyone understands what will happen before you head to the beach.

Getting Your Equipment

Most UK beginner surf schools provide a foam surfboard, wetsuit and leash. The equipment is chosen to make learning easier, not harder.

⚠️ Common Beginner Mistake

Buying lots of equipment before your first lesson. Take the lesson first, learn what suits you and then choose your own gear with confidence.

The Beach Safety Briefing

Before entering the water, your instructor will explain the day's waves, where you'll surf, how to handle your board and what to do if you fall. This short briefing is one of the most important parts of the session.

🏄 Bob Gnarly Tip

Ask questions. No question is too small. Good instructors would much rather you ask than guess.

Learning the Pop-Up

You'll practise the movement that takes you from lying on your board to standing. Your instructor will demonstrate it, break it into simple steps and let you practise before you enter the water.

Walking Into the Water

You'll normally begin in shallow water with small whitewater waves. Your instructor will stay close and gradually introduce you to balancing, paddling and positioning your board.

Catching Your First Wave

Your instructor will help position your board, tell you when to paddle and may give you a gentle push as the whitewater approaches. You may stand first time — or you may need several attempts. Either way, those first few seconds of gliding across the water are unforgettable.

🇬🇧 UK Surf Tip

Beginner surf schools choose beaches and conditions specifically for learning. Small, gentle waves give you more time to practise and build confidence.

💙 Remember...

Your first lesson isn't measured by how many waves you catch. It's about learning safely, building confidence and discovering whether surfing could become something you love.

🏄 Bob Gnarly's Beginner Picks

🏄 Beginner Foam Surfboards

Large foam boards offer stability and make catching waves much easier while you're learning.

So... Are You Ready?

Your first surf lesson is structured, supervised and designed for people exactly where you are now. You don't need to know what you're doing — that's what the lesson is for.

🏄 Bob Gnarly Tip

Your first lesson is just the beginning. Don't judge your surfing ability after one session. Treat it as the first chapter of a much bigger journey.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Will I definitely stand up?

Many beginners do, but not everyone. Standing up is a bonus; learning safely and enjoying yourself is the real goal.

What should I bring?

Usually swimwear, towel, sunscreen, water and warm clothes for afterwards. The school normally provides the board and wetsuit.

Will the water be deep?

Beginner lessons are normally held in shallow water with gentle waves, under instructor supervision.

What if I'm nervous?

That's completely normal. Tell your instructor and let them guide you through the session.

🌊 One Final Wave…

The hardest part of learning to surf is often deciding to book the lesson. Once you've done that, you're already on your way.
