The Tank

A high-volume step-up built for bigger, more powerful waves — with paddle-friendly foam under the chest, plenty of rocker, and thinner rails and tail to keep the board feeling responsive when the pace picks up.

Meet The Tank

More foam for the waves that demand more board.

The Tank came from Nathan Florence wanting more foam in his favourite step-up boards. Pyzel developed a beefed-up take on the Next Step: a board for sessions when a regular shortboard starts to feel undersized, whether that means powerful local surf or a serious surf trip.

The idea is not simply to make a thick board. The Tank carries extra volume under the chest to help with paddle power and early entry, while its rocker and thinner rails and tail are designed to retain a more performance-oriented feel once you're on the wave.

Wave Range 6–16ft

Designed for bigger, more powerful surf and waves that call for extra paddle power and control.

Rail Profile Medium / Standard

Thinner rails and tail relative to the board's overall thickness help maintain sensitivity.

Bottom Single → Double → Vee

Pyzel specifies a single concave transitioning through double concave to vee.

Fin Setup 3 / 4 / 5 Fin

Available as a thruster, quad or five-fin setup.

The Tank is about having enough board to get into serious waves, without giving up the responsive feel you want when it's time to turn.

What makes it work

Paddle in early. Hold your line.

The Tank balances extra volume for paddling with the rocker, rail sensitivity and tail control needed when the surf gets more powerful.

01 · Paddle power

Foam where it helps most

Extra volume under the chest is intended to help you get into waves earlier and more easily, paddle through long sessions and get back out through the impact zone.

02 · Drive & hold

Rocker for powerful surf

Pyzel gives the Tank plenty of rocker to keep a high-performance feel in larger waves, with the drive and hold to push through turns and handle late drops.

03 · Sensitivity

Thinner rails and tail

Although the board carries extra foam overall, its rails and tail are thinner relative to its thickness. That helps avoid an overly boggy feel when travelling fast or setting a bottom turn.

The shape

Step-up volume with a performance-minded feel.

The Tank is a beefed-up evolution of the Next Step, developed around the needs of surfers who want more foam when their usual shortboard is no longer enough for the conditions. Its outline and volume distribution are intended to support paddling into bigger waves while keeping the board composed and responsive.

Underneath, the bottom contour runs from a single concave through double concave to vee. Combined with the rocker and thinner rail-and-tail profile, the design aims to balance paddle power with drive, hold and sensitivity.

Who is The Tank for?

For surfers who need more board when the waves get serious.

01 · Step-up sessions

When your shortboard feels too small

The Tank is intended for the days when extra length and foam can help you paddle into bigger surf and feel more secure in powerful conditions.

02 · Surf trips

For powerful lineups

Pyzel describes a board proven in heavy-water waves around the world, while still suitable for local spots that demand a little more board.

03 · Volume-conscious sizing

Extra foam, without ignoring feel

The Tank is designed to add paddle-friendly volume while using rocker and a thinner rail-and-tail profile to retain sensitivity and control.

Sizing

The Tank dimensions.

Standard dimensions published by Pyzel. The manufacturer recommends going around 2–10 inches longer than your regular shortboard and adding at least ¼–⅜ inch of thickness, with more added as length increases. Treat this as a starting point, not a substitute for choosing dimensions suited to your surfing and conditions.

Bob's Take

The Tank is a purpose-built step-up for days when paddle power and control matter most.

What stands out is the balance Pyzel is aiming for. The Tank carries extra foam under the chest to help you get into waves, but its higher rocker and thinner rails and tail are designed to keep it from feeling like a bulky board once you're up and moving.

Its stated 6–16ft range makes its role clear: this isn't an everyday small-wave board, but a step-up for powerful surf and sessions where you want more board under you. The manufacturer recommends sizing 2–10 inches longer than your regular shortboard and adding at least ¼–⅜ inch of thickness, increasing that as you go longer.

Our advice: start with the conditions you want the board for, then compare the published volumes with what you know works for you. Don't choose by length alone — width, thickness, volume, your existing board and the type of waves you surf all matter.
