LESSON 066
Planning a Surf Trip
Build a surf trip around realistic waves, travel, timing, budget and your own ability.
🎯 Today's Mission
Choose a UK or European surf destination and sketch a realistic three-day surf trip around conditions, travel and recovery.
📚 In This Lesson You'll Learn
- How to choose a destination.
- How to build flexibility into a trip.
- How to balance surfing with travel and recovery.
- Why Plan B matters.
🗺️ Start With the Waves
Don't choose a destination only because it looks exciting. Start by asking what type of waves you want, what your ability can handle and when those conditions are most likely.
📋 Your Trip Checklist
- Destination and travel dates.
- Likely swell, wind and tide patterns.
- Suitable beaches and backup spots.
- Accommodation close enough to surf efficiently.
- Board, wetsuit and travel protection.
- Budget for transport, food, parking and contingencies.
🇬🇧 UK Surf Tip
UK surf trips often work best with flexibility. Weather and swell can shift, so leave room to move days, beaches or session times.
🏄 Bob Gnarly Tip
Plan the trip, not every wave. Leave enough flexibility to respond to the ocean.
⚠️ Common Mistake
Booking everything tightly around one forecast. Forecasts change; your trip should have enough flexibility to survive that change.
🧠 Quick Exercise
Write down your destination, primary break, backup break, preferred swell, preferred wind and one non-surf activity. You've started planning like a surf traveller.
➡️ Next Step
Once you know where you're going, learn how to research a surf spot you've never surfed before.
