What Is the Surfing Line?
Once you catch a green wave, the most important change is that the wave is no longer simply carrying you towards the beach. The face of the wave gives you a moving surface to travel across.
Your surfing line is the path you choose along that face. Instead of pointing straight down the wave, you begin travelling across it, following the section that is still breaking.

Look where you want to go. Your board tends to follow your eyes and shoulders. If you stare at the beach, you're much more likely to run straight towards it.
Read the Shape Before You Take Off
🌊 Look for a shoulder
A shoulder is the unbroken part of the wave beside the breaking section. For beginners, a gentle shoulder is often the easiest place to learn to travel.
🌀 Find the breaking section
The pocket is the more powerful part of the wave near where it is breaking. You want enough energy to keep moving, but you don't need to sit directly in the most critical section.
💡 Did You Know?
Waves don't all peel at the same speed or in exactly the same direction. Learning to watch a few waves before paddling can tell you far more than jumping straight onto the first one.
⚠️ Common Beginner Mistake
Standing up first and deciding where to go afterwards. Try to identify your likely direction before the wave reaches you.

On UK beginner beaches, look for small, clean waves with a gentle shoulder rather than steep, fast sections. A slower wave gives you more time to make decisions.
