Founded by skateboarding legends Tony Hawk and Per Welinder, Birdhouse was born during a difficult period for the skate industry, when skateboarding was coming out of its huge 1980s boom and the future of the sport was far from certain.

Rather than walking away from skateboarding, Hawk and Welinder created Birdhouse Projects with a simple philosophy: build a team of dedicated skateboarders, support the sport they loved and keep pushing skateboarding forward. That attitude became a defining part of the Birdhouse identity and helped establish the brand as a genuine part of skateboarding culture rather than simply another board company.

From Tony Hawk to a Global Skate Team

With Tony Hawk at the heart of the brand, Birdhouse quickly assembled a team featuring some of the most influential skateboarders of the era. Riders including Jeremy Klein, Steve Berra, Willy Santos, Andrew Reynolds, Bucky Lasek and Heath Kirchart helped establish Birdhouse as a serious force across both street and vert skateboarding.

Birdhouse also became known for its influential skate videos, particularly Feasters and The End, while members of the team appeared in the hugely successful Tony Hawk's Pro Skater video game series. These projects helped introduce Birdhouse and its riders to a much wider audience and cemented the brand's place in skateboarding history.
