Why use a base coat? Well it gives a much better texture to your wax job - particularly when you're using softer cool water waxes that can go slick quickly. You won't have to constantly clean off this slick wax and you'll be using less wax - saving you both time and money.
It's an ideal way to deal for building up a lasting texture on a new surfboard, or get rid of the gunk on your existing board and give it some TLC.
Once you've got the base sorted you can then skim on a layer of a softer top coat, giving you great grip.
